Little Frey Frey 💜 She has been walking with Little Frey Frey 💜

She has been walking with me for 6 years, but with the deterioration of her eye sight she is retiring to her sofa and enjoying short, familiar walks 🏡

She turned up as a dog who had not learnt how to run free, yet in the time I have known her, she has gained confidence around people and could keep up with the bigger dogs when she wanted to! 💨

She has given me so much to smile and laugh about in my time with her💜 I’ll miss her antics but will look forward to having a cwtch on the sofa instead 🥰

Let me tell you a story 📖 I was coming to the Let me tell you a story 📖

I was coming to the end of a walk with a dog that is reactive towards other dogs, who had done AMAZINGLY - watching other dogs calmly and moving away freely without stress 💫

Yet upon dropping this dog home, we were met with another dog who had just been let through the front gate, off lead. It came hurtling towards us barking, with body language that indicated an attack 🤬

What would you do in this situation?!

Having worked with hundreds of dog owners, I know that many would panic 🤯 For owners walking reactive dogs, having an unknown dog approach them is their worst nightmare. They may have progressed to the dog feeling calm in the presence of other dogs and reduced their reactivity levels, until on one occasion a dog that is not under control imposes on the dogs space or attacks, setting their training back and potentially causing escalation in reactive behaviours (barking, lunging, biting etc).

For an owner with a breed many are already wary of, it can make going for a walk extremely stressful, and are at risk of abuse from members of the public. And that’s not what anyone gets a dog for! 🦮🤦🏼‍♀️

Yet there I was with a misconceived breed, with a hound about to cause chaos. On a road of houses, my options were minimal. So with little reaction from the dog I was walking (despite the dog running towards us, barking and the owner screaming after it) I stood in front as a barrier and was able to grab the other dogs collar. Holding them apart, the owner retrieved the dog, hit it, and then walked away. Calling out ‘sorry’ once they crossed back over the road.

There are so many questions that could be asked here, but the main reasons I am telling you this story is because -

🐾 It is every owners responsibility to train their dog.. even if that is just a reliable recall or having management in place.

🐾 It is not the dogs fault that they have learnt to behave inappropriately/aggressively.

🐾 This is a perfect example of how quickly a situation can get out of control. Whether it’s lack of training, the owner having become complacent, or the combination of the two... CONTINUED IN COMMENTS ↘️

Developing a strong bond with a dog is often over Developing a strong bond with a dog is often over looked, with many believing that because they know they are safe and trustworthy, that the dog should know that too.

Working with this beautiful girl on her reactivity to other dogs has been so much more than working on her calmness around and acceptance of other dogs in the environment. Its been about establishing clear communication, developing new skills, and most importantly having fun and enjoying each other’s company 🥰💜
