This photo was taken around 8 years ago ๐Ÿคฏ Up This photo was taken around 8 years ago ๐Ÿคฏ

Up until this point I had been working in dead end jobs, with minimal clarity of what I wanted to do with my life. I had always loved animals, but hadnโ€™t considered ways in which I could incorporate that into my career.

Yet with a a few detours along the way, i changed my life dramatically (and clued myself up on extending leads ๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿ˜‰). And I know it will continue to evolve in ways I cannot imagine right now and always contain the core passions I was able to identify some years ago.

I opened up my mind to new ways of thinking which resulted in finding a way in which I can live my best life with my best friends ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿพ

A holistic package will be available soon which can help you identify thoughts that hold you back from fully participating in your life and finding success (whether that be in dog training or your personal life). Because like myself, I know some need that space to discuss and explore thoughts and benefit from accountability and encouragement from another person! ๐Ÿค
There are so many misconceptions in dog training, There are so many misconceptions in dog training, so with the increase in dog ownership I cannot help but worry about what the average dog walk is going to be like in the coming year.. ๐Ÿ˜ซ

It can already be difficult to find a suitable location to walk dogs that are under training and require a space to relax. Yet in too many cases you will have dogs run from their owner the other side of the beach to say hello and try to instigate play... even with dogs that are quite clearly saying they are not interested ๐Ÿ–•๐Ÿผ

Dog owners are too quick to let a dog off the lead without a strong recall, which more often than not results in the dog finding more rewarding behaviours to engage in... cue running over to other dogs or chasing other animals ๐Ÿฟ๐ŸฆŠ๐Ÿ™ˆ

I get it.. when I first had Halli I had an operation, so I let her off the lead to prevent her from pulling the stitches in my stomach. Yet when I began my journey in dog training i quickly realised the errors I had made. There are so many foundations that need to be laid and without them you are at risk of becoming one of those owners who has a dog that could be deemed out of control.

As a trainer my expectations may be higher than the average pet owner, yet it is all our responsibility to ensure that a dog is safe and will not cause distress. With an explosion of dog training resources and support available to you now, there really is no excuse! ๐Ÿค”

Yet that is not to say your dog has to be perfect - there are many ways to engage your dogs brain and exercise them in better ways that just letting them run off lead. ๐Ÿ’๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ You can take the first step with your puppy by clicking the link in my bio to receive a free ebook which will start the journey in understanding how you can set your pup up to become a reliable adult dog and prevent them from being one that finds themselves in a dangerous situation because of impulsive behaviour! โš ๏ธ

Despite the continued delay of in person classes and consults, it doesnโ€™t mean training is delayed! For new puppy owners, click the link in the bio to receive a free e-book containing tips on how to prevent undesirable behaviours and build strong foundations to prepare for in person classes! ๐Ÿ’ซ๐Ÿ™Œ

I believe we are all looking forward to having th I believe we are all looking forward to having the freedom to explore the beautiful walks on our doorstep and have the space to enjoy it without the concerns of current guidelines ๐Ÿพ. Yet until then you can enjoy some extra time with your dog and work on developing skills that will ultimately make your walks more enjoyable too. You can do this by joining an online class of mine ๐Ÿ™Œ(detailed on my stories and facebook)
M O N D A Y M O T I V A T I O N ๐Ÿ™Œ When your d M O N D A Y M O T I V A T I O N ๐Ÿ™Œ

When your dog comes across other animals, how would you hope they respond? I can guess that calmness, disinterest, or at least the ability to respond to cues (most importantly recall) would be on the list! Yet has your dog got a reinforcement history with listening to you around things that move quickly and smell good? ๐Ÿฟ๐Ÿˆ๐Ÿ“ Or do they know it can be fun to ignore your calls and instead investigate or chase?

Finding these chickens was a nice opportunity to practice reinforcing any disengagement from them and also rewarding every time he responded to cues. ๐Ÿ•โ€๐Ÿฆบ

If your dog is motivated by food, use that. If your dog loves to chase and play, take a toy out on a walk to reinforce engagement with YOU ๐Ÿค ๐Ÿ™Œ

BUT make sure to set yourself and your dog up for success. Remember itโ€™s a Monday and that means we have a week of goals to meet. You might set your self up for success by keeping your phone ๐Ÿ“ตat a distance (so you donโ€™t get distracted), or you may put regular breaks in (so that you donโ€™t become overwhelmed), or you may focus on one task until completed ๐Ÿ“ (to avoid confusion).

For the dog, this might look like putting distance between him and the chickens to make it easier for him to disengage, you may only spend a few minutes at a time training around this distraction, or you may break down what behaviours you want the dog to be able to do around high value distractions, yet today may only focus on one behaviour.

So what reward motivates you and/or your dog to achieve set goals?! ๐ŸŽพ๐Ÿ—๐Ÿฅ•The dog pictured LOVES food, therefore his reward when ignoring the chickens was the sachet of meat he has for his dinner, as to him it is of more value than his biscuits. I could have also used a toy, as he loves to tug, yet for his first time around chickens I wanted to keep him calm (as possible for a lab x springer!!)

So find the right motivator, set yourself up for success, and most importantly .. have fun! ๐Ÿพ

I S O L A T I O N To varying degrees all humans I S O L A T I O N

To varying degrees all humans have experienced loneliness, ripped from the warm embrace of family, friends, support systems and communities. We have all had to navigate through the new forms of communication and adapt our behaviour against our instincts and intrinsic needs. Our hands have been tied, no longer can we reach out and hold a hand and be there in ways that are much more than just gesture.

Naturally I am independent and can struggle to reach out and ask for help. I found that having the peace of nature and the company of dogs was an opportunity to walk off my troubles. Yet that limited my sense of connection to others, and didnโ€™t change much. Over the past few years I have been adapting my own behaviour, finding more effective ways to communicate to those around me, and feel in alignment with my intrinsic needs. Lockdown was a new challenge, yet continuing to find new ways of connecting with others has been rewarding and ultimately helped meet those needs that have been neglected during lockdown.

We may not be able to hold a hand or embrace one another, yet when we are brave and reach out in a new way, which may not feel natural at first, we can begin to feel the warmth of connection we all need to have in order to do more than just survive.

One way you could reach out to those around you and boost your sense of connection within a community is by taking part in @saltandlightretreatuk โ€˜s Braver than you think workshop OR the 21 day reset. These are online retreats that are filled with well-being exercises to bring you closer to those around you from the comfort of your home.

Isolation may be continuing, but that doesnโ€™t need to restrict you connecting with others ๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿพ

Despite this little man being re-homed in the middle of lockdown, he is a different dog (well, almost! Although I did do a double take with recent haircut ๐Ÿ™„๐Ÿ˜‚). He has learnt plenty of tricks, scent detection and most importantly how to be more socially appropriate and walk nicely with other dogs ๐Ÿฅฐ
He comes to the online classes and aces all tasks ๐Ÿคฉ๐Ÿ™Œ and was making great progress in the distraction classes when they were allowed!! ๐Ÿ˜ท Hopefully it wont be too long before we can all train together in person again, but until then you can get involved with upping your training game online! ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿฆฎ
